It's simple to breathe new life into your home interior by altering your wall decor. There are countless options at hand. This article specifically relates to framed art photos, but you can also consider paintings, wrought iron, textiles, such as tapestries, quilts, and carpets, decorative tile either hung up or permanently installed, and on and on.

Adding framed art photos is an easy and affordable way to renew a room. It's essential to first understand the kind of effect you want to achieve: contemporary, restful, casual, whimsical, reserved, etc. This will reduce and guide your choices. Then keep in mind the colors, accessories, and furnishings of the room. The new framed art must fit with your current decor. This will guide your consideration of colors and themes. Also consider the lighting and the size of the space, and at what time of day the art will be most viewed. A photo hanging in the dark is no good!

Matting for your photos is also important, and it will contribute to the final mood. For example, B&W photos mounted on ivory matting, instead of the standard white, give a warm, antique feel. Matting can also relate the photo to the colors of the room, or emphasize a color in the photo. You can use one of your accent shades for a single mat, or, for a fancier look, try twofold matting: use a neutral shade for the top mat, and the accent color on the bottom mat, with only a thin strip (about 1/4") of the bottom mat showing.

With attention to your colors, mood and theme, it's time to look for art you like, and that matches your decor. Choose art that you feel a connection with. It may be a place where you've had a vacation that holds fond memories, or a panorama that gives you a certain mood. Also consider printing one of your own favorite photos. It will save you money and increase your choice. You can use your own printer, if it's a good one, or download a photo (with permission!) and take it to your local photo center. Only use high quality photo printing paper.

Some websites for art photos:

ArtPhotoWallDecor.com

This website offers a photographer's pick of the best art photos for your wall decor. It's an Art.com affiliate site, which means it also links in to Art.com's complete online matting and framing options. You can view your chosen artwork with a variety of frames and mats online, and even set the color of the wall behind it.

Library of Congress photos in the public domain

I like using historical photos, and many are now available in the public domain. The US Library of Congress has many online, but it's not the only site to search. Most will be B&W, and the condition is not always great, but the imperfections can sometimes add to the mood of the photo. It may not be possible to enlarge the image without losing resolution. Not all of the Library of Congress photos are in the public domain! Always check that you have the rights to use it.

Flickr.com

Flickr.com is an amazing reserve for creative photos. If you find a photo you like here, ask permission of the owner before using it. Some photos will be restricted by the photographer, others not. Many photographers will happily allow you to use their photos, just for the personal satisfaction of knowing that their work is appreciated. I've had more "yeses" than "nos."
