Whether you're adding on new shingles or selecting a whole new roof for your home, there are many styles to choose from. Flat roof: If your home has no pitch or is inclined by no more than ½ inch per foot, you need a flat roof. Flat roofs are typically used for homes in areas with low precipitation and milder climates. Gable roofs: One of the most commonly used sloped roofs in North America, gable roofs have planes that incline upward from two sides of the home. These roofs are designed so that snow and rain can easily run off to the gutters, resulting in the need for much less maintenance than flat roofs. Hip roof: The second-most popular sloped roof used in North America, a hip roof is constructed so that all four sides of the roof are sloped to create a peak. Without any end walls, the hip roof is the most aerodynamic roof available.
