It's easy to update your home by simply changing the interior wall decor. There are endless opportunities for you. This article refers to the hanging wall photos, but you can also use paintings, wrought iron or other types of sculpture, fabric items such as tapestries, rugs and blankets, decorative tiles, either hung up or installed, and the list goes on and on.
Adding framed photos is quick and easy way to transform your room. It's important to understand the type of mood you want to achieve: comfortable, modern, whimsical, formal, etc. This will narrow and direct your choice. Then consider, furniture, accessories and colors in the room. The new art must still compliment existing decor. This idea will guide your decision on the color and theme. Also consider lighting and the size of the space. Using small photos on a large wall means you either use a few, for a blank look, or use many, for a cluttered look.
Matting for your hanging wall pictures is an important factor, and contributes to the room's tone. For example, a black and white photo with a pale ivory mat, instead of the regular white, has a nice antique feel. Matting can also tie a photo to the room's decor colors. You can use the accent color in a single mat, or, for a more sophisticated look, try a double mat. Use a neutral color for the top mat, and the accent color on the bottom mat, with only about 1 / 4" of the accent color showing.
With your theme, color and mood in mind, it's now time to find framed art you like, that fits your decor. Select a picture that communicates something to you. Maybe there's a certain city which has good memories for you, or a scene that gives you a certain sense: calming or exciting or funny, etc. Also consider printing photos yourself. This will save you some money and to greatly increase your options. You can use your own printer, if you have a good one, or upload a picture (with permission!) to a flash drive and take it to a photo center. Be sure to use quality photo paper for printing.
Some good websites to find art photos:
www.ArtPhotoWallDecor.com
This is a website that offers one photographer's selection of the best photos art available for your wall decor. It's an affiliate site to Art.com, which means you also get access to Art.com's full-service framing and matting options. You can search for a photo with a wide range of mats and frames in the web viewer, and even choose the wall color behind it.
Library of Congress public domain photo search (http://e-articles.info/e-submit-articles.htm)
I like to use historical photographs, and many of them are now in the public domain. U.S. Library of Congress has many on-line, but it isn't the only place to find them. Most will be black and white, and the quality is not always up to modern standards, but that may be part of the charm. And note that not all Library of Congress photos are in the public domain. Always check before you use one.
www.Flickr.com
Flickr.com is an amazing resource for photography. If you find an image you like here, you have to ask permission of the photographer before using it. Some photos will be limited by the photographer, but many are not. Many photographers are happy to let you use their photos for personal use, only for the satisfaction of knowing their work is appreciated. |
